One of the saddest things I think I've ever done was check the IMDb page for Firefly. Why? Sitting on the page in the Episodes section, that little number underneath the "Seasons" title.
1.
One lonely little season, just 13 full episodes, aired out of order from 2002-2003, is all we were able to get from this gem. I'm still a little offended, if you can't tell.
The show encompasses so many themes that may seem a little odd to mash together. Space outlaws using guns that look like they came straight out of a Western? Bounty hunters, crime lords, mysteriously hyper-intelligent teenage girls, fencing duels, ominous government agency, a mud farm, and DINOSAURS?

Ok, so the dinosaurs are just toys. But still.
With a diverse cast and superb writing (Joss Whedon? Come on!), it's a serious shame this show got cancelled so swiftly. Yet somehow, after all these years, the show's fans are still alive and well. "Still flying", as they say. Cosplays at conventions will tell you that much, and a quick scroll through sci-fi themed blogs on Tumblr will confirm it. Can't stop the signal, and who would want to?
Even this ridiculous hat has become iconic. In fact, I've even looked up a pattern to knit one for myself!
Two years after the show's run ended in 2003, Serenity was born. I have a love/hate relationship with the movie (mostly love, honestly). The hate part comes from the finality of it. I wish I could always hold out hope that some day, we might just get Season 2, Episode 1.
